A Viable Alternative to Group I

The high purity of Chevron Group II base oils makes them a viable alternative for Asian lubricant manufacturers. They are viable technically, economically and logistically.

Technically viable

Compared to Group I, Chevron Group II offers significantly higher performance. Compared to Group III, Chevron Group II base oil offers no loss in performance for many important applications.

In fact, many Asian OEMs specify lubricants that are blended with Gp II base stocks for their North American vehicles. Additive suppliers are experienced at optimizing formulations using Group II base oil.

Economically viable

Chevron Group II base oils are suitable for most industrial applications, often requiring minimal or no re-qualification cost. They are less expensive than Group III base oil and in top tier applications can require fewer additives than Group I base oil.

Logistically viable

Chevron Chevron Group II base oil is now readily available for sampling.

Comparison of 4cSt Base Oil Properties

Group II base oils offer significantly better performance than Group I base oils and are less expensive than Group III base oils, making them an excellent alternative for many industrial and automotive specifications. Benefits include:

  • Zero sulphur
  • Excellent oxidation resistance
  • Requires lower additive treats than Group I in many formulations
  • Lower cost than Group III
  • Heavier viscosity enables 10W, 15W, 20W for Automotive engine oils
  • Excellent soot handling for HDEO

Group II In Industrial Applications

  • Enhances marketing opportunity/flexibility for industrial oil producers
  • Due to superior oxidation stability significantly extends oil life over Group I formulations in key industrial applications and frequently without incurring re-qualification costs
    • – Natural gas engine oils
    • – Turbine oils
    • – Compressor Oils
      • > Premium formulations based on Group III or PAO
      • > Group II can replace Group III with proper additives
    • – Paper Machine Oils
      • > Group II enhances oxidation stability and improves ultra fine filtration performance
    • – Metalworking Fluids
      • > More consistent quality performance
  • Can be easily substituted for Group III in many industrial applications with no loss in performance or increase in qualification costs.
