The Operational Excellence policy and the Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) were implemented to support Chevron's commitment to protect the safety and health of people and the environment through safe, reliable and efficient operations.

In 2005, Chevron engaged an independent organization to verify that its OEMS met the requirements of internationally-recognized environmental and safety standards: ISO 14001 - Environmental Management Systems and OSHAS 18001 - Health and Safety Management Systems.

Lloyd's Registry Quality Assurance (LRQA) reviewed the company's Corporate Operational Excellence Policy and the Operational Excellence Management System.

The independent auditors attested that "the design of OEMS fully addresses, and in some respects goes beyond, the requirements of ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001".
